Recently the J Bar L cowboys participated in a ranch roping clinic put on by ranch roping specialist and clinician Kip Fladland. Kip has over 27 years of experience, of which 5 were exclusively working with world renown clinician Buck Brannaman. Cattle Drive

If participating in a 15 mile cattle drive across the gorgeous Centennial Valley, Montana sounds appealing, then we have the perfect week for you to come join us on the J Bar L Ranch. Branding is complete

We just finished branding about 390 calves that were born in June and July. Thanks to the crew of 40+ people, we enjoyed a really fun and efficient branding. A good time was had by all and the calves are all healthy and looking really good. In fact, they are the best set of calves we have ever had. We really appreciate everyone's help and hard work!

Big Hole River Fly Fishing

Skwalla stone flies are hatching and big fish are being caught on big DRY flies! We enjoyed three spectacular days of fishing over Easter weekend. We floated two days on the Big Hole...less than two miles from the J-L Fishing Cabin, and one day on the Beaverhead below Pipe Organ bridge. Spring time fishing is some of the best of the year.

Charlie says Grass Fed beef is the best!

With his meaty hands clenching a big chunk of J-L grass fed sirloin, Charlie screams with delite. Though he only has two teeth and can't actually fit the steak into his mouth, it is clear that the juicy sample is his favorite steak ever!

Chocolate Doc and Centennial Red at their new home

Chocolate Doc and Centennial Red are enjoying their new home. Chocolate has been renamed "Fudge" by her new friends and she didn't even seem to mind. We are very happy that the mares went to loving family and the kids are going to have a lot of fun with these two.

The ranch recently bought a new horse for the working ranch guest program. Sunny is a new favorite amongst the staff and is sure to be a big hit for guests. He does everything well including roping and moving cows. Plus, he is super friendly and loves kids!

Winter cattle work

We recently de-loused the cows, calves and fat cattle. The weather was gorgeous (nearly 60 degrees!) and it was fun to trail the cattle over the hills. The cattle drive was a maiden voyage for the recently weaned calves to be trailed without the guidance of their mothers. It was one of those deals where you kind of hold your breathe because they could get a wild idea and we would have spent a week re-gathering them out of the hills. Luckily, the process went really well and we sure appreciated the help from Jake and Andrew. We are now in full-swing of feeding hay to the various herds and doing planning work for the upcoming grazing seasons.

Charlie's first horse

Grandma Susan (Bryan's mom) recently gave Charlie his first horse...which was also Bryan's first mount about 32 years ago. The wild steed is still a little too much for Charlie to handle by himself, but before we know it he'll be saddled up and ready to rock.

The cows came home

This morning is bitter cold (-20F) at the Twin Bridges ranch, but at least the tractor is running again. The cows will be happy to see hay when Steve shows up. Libby has already been out caring for the horses. Jim is in the shop doctoring a frozen diesel pickup.

Despite extremely frigid conditions (as low as -33F in the Centennial Valley) over the past week we have brought all of the cattle and horses back down to the Twin Bridges ranch for the winter. They are all healthy and happy to be here. In fact, most of them did a little dance when they stepped off of the trailers! Now we will be feeding them hay until Spring when we head back to the Valley.

Each of us at the J-L want to wish all of our past and future guests a very happy holiday season!

Most recent addition to the J-L Team

As many of our 2008 guests know, Bryan and Libby were expecting a new arrival to their family. Well, Charles Alan Ulring was born on 9/04/08 and is a perfect addition to their family and the J-L ranch team. The adoption process has gone extremely well and they expect it to be completely finalized around the New Year. Charlie is very healthy and happy and already has a saddle, chaps, hat, spurs and of course his own horse. It will be a few years, but he will soon be out riding the range with us before we know it!

Here are photos of the little fella and his proud parents enjoying a beautiful Montana fall day.
