The J Bar L Ranch is proud of its stud, mares and colts. We partner with 87-year-old cowboy Nelson Starkweather, who has been raising paint horses for more than fifty years. Our mares are from solid breeding stock, many from recognized lines.
Born on the ranch, our horses are raised using natural horsemanship methods. It is amazing to watch them grow and develop individual personalities. We wean them at six months and immediately halter-break them. They receive our continual care and handling, making them gentle around people.
When they are between the ages of two and three, we start riding the horses using natural horsemanship methods. We immediately begin using them in the cattle operation so they become familiar with dogs, cows, ropes and ditches.
By the time they are three or four years old, they are gentle-broke and ready to be sold or join our riding herd. Guests are welcome to observe the training process and play with the colts while staying at the ranch.
