Notes From J-L

Adventures on the Ranch

Monday, February 20, 2012

Yesterday we headed into the valley to attempt to work on a few wells. The Centennial Valley, unlike the rest of Montana, had seen some snow, but our confidence increased the further we drove. It wasn't until the well was within sight that the truck came to a full stop in knee deep snow. We were stuck. The dig out with a shovel kind of stuck.

Luckily the guys from Graham Drilling were able to pull us out and we had an expert on hand to put chains on the tires, creating this photo op of Bryan maneuvering between the tire and a snow drift. We didn't make it to the wells, but we did get to see a coyote and a few raptors and as always, enjoy a day in the Centennial.

The "best behaved" award has to go to Charlie who managed to keep a smile on everyone's face till the end of the day!

Meet the Team Monday

Bryan Ulring

General Manager and Head Honcho at the J Bar L Ranches

Where are you from?  Born in Minnesota and raised in South Dakota.

Favorite season?  I like the changes and could never pick just one favorite season...ok maybe fall, if I have to pick just one. It's nice and cool, clear skies, but still warm. Spring is awesome too. I love the green grass and the regeneration of new life. Of course, in the summer there's grasshopper fishing... and there's skiing in the winter. Oh, the options are just overwhelming.

Favorite place?  Geographically speaking, it's Montana. More specific? It's hard to beat the Centennial Valley. Mentally I prefer outer space. That's where I spend most of my time.

Tea or Coffee?  What's with making all these tough decisions? I like both.

My best hidden talent?  This is a hard one. I brag about almost everything so it's hard to think of a hidden talent. I guess most people might not guess that in my day, I was a pretty fair skier of both the liquid and frozen variety.

The best thing I ever ate...  Duh, grassfed beef! I actually like fresh seafood just as much as grassfed beef, but it's just a little harder to come by in the Centennial Valley.

On the weekends I...  Enjoy time with the family. Now that Charlie is a little older I am very excited to take him fishing, camping, hunting, and skiing.

The best thing about the J Bar L is...  Hands down, the J-L team is the best thing about the ranch. Well, the team and Grandma Birdie's granola bars!

True Grit: Conde Nast Traveler features the J Bar L Ranch

The April issue of Conde Nast Traveler features the article "True Grit", in which writer Susan Hack visits three guest ranches that conservation is on the forefront of how each ranch manages its' operations. The J Bar L Ranch was privileged to be one of the featured ranches. You can click on the following link to view the article in its entirety, "True Grit".

As portrayed in the article, you may experience a few long days in the saddle as a working ranch guest on the J Bar L Ranch, but I promise we won't blister your hands or work you too hard...unless that is what you desire, then I am sure it could be arranged.  We do understand that this is your vacation and although the work must be done, I guarantee that the fun and enjoyment will definitely outweigh the dirt and sweat at the end of the week.  So, if you would like to saddle up and join us for a Working Ranch Vacation on the J Bar L, please give us a call at 406-684-5435 and we will set you up for an experience of the true Montana west that you will never want to forget. Cattle move back to Twin Bridges for the winter

Due to a blizzard and unseasonal amounts of early snow we had to pull the cattle out of the Centennial Valley three weeks earlier than planned. The cattle are now at the Twin Bridges ranch healthy and happy....and a LOT warmer! last trucks 2010

Spring Fish the Big Hole

Spring fishing on the Big Hole is incredible. April and May are some of our very favorite months to be on the Big Hole. It is rare to see other anglers and the fish are fresh out of their winter slumbers. The rainbows and browns are voraciously hungry and far less choosey with their diets. Nymph and streamer fishing is the norm and 30+ fish days are common. There are also those incredible days when the Skwala stones or BWO's are hatching and the fish make their first appearances to the surface. It is really hard to beat a warm spring day on the river! Come stay at the J Bar L Fishing Cabin and enjoy your own private access to the Big Hole.

Perfecting our Horsemanship and Roping Skills

Recently the J Bar L cowboys participated in a ranch roping clinic put on by ranch roping specialist and clinician Kip Fladland. Kip has over 27 years of experience, of which 5 were exclusively working with world renown clinician Buck Brannaman. If you would be interested in participating in a horsemanship/basic roping clinic put on by Kip at the J-L Ranch, please contact Joy at 406-684-5435.

Future Friends

Even though it was taken early this spring, I couldn't resist posting this picture. Charlie and George and going to be best buddies and will undoubtedly cover many memorable miles together in the near future.

Branding is complete

We just finished branding about 390 calves that were born in June and July. Thanks to the crew of 40+ people, we enjoyed a really fun and efficient branding. A good time was had by all and the calves are all healthy and looking really good. In fact, they are the best set of calves we have ever had. We really appreciate everyone's help and hard work!

Clean Plate Club

Here are some enthusiastic members of the J Bar L Ranch's Clean Plate Club. Joy sure knows how to keep the guests well nourished and happy. And look at the great reward she is offering the club members!

Big Hole River Fly Fishing

Skwalla stone flies are hatching and big fish are being caught on big DRY flies! We enjoyed three spectacular days of fishing over Easter weekend. We floated two days on the Big Hole...less than two miles from the J-L Fishing Cabin, and one day on the Beaverhead below Pipe Organ bridge. Spring time fishing is some of the best of the year.

Chocolate Doc and Centennial Red at their new home

Chocolate Doc and Centennial Red are enjoying their new home. Chocolate has been renamed "Fudge" by her new friends and she didn't even seem to mind. We are very happy that the mares went to loving family and the kids are going to have a lot of fun with these two.

Charlie says Grass Fed beef is the best!

With his meaty hands clenching a big chunk of J-L grass fed sirloin, Charlie screams with delite. Though he only has two teeth and can't actually fit the steak into his mouth, it is clear that the juicy sample is his favorite steak ever!

Wii cowboy!

We just had to post this photo of Steve (aka Scuba Steve) practising his yoga. Who knew cowboys were so flexible?!?

Registered Paint Horses For Sale

We have several beautiful ranch-raised horses for sale. Many of the horses are young and most are mares. They range in age and experience from just-weaned fillies to 5 year old mares that have been ridden and used on the ranch. All reasonable offers to good homes will be considered. Please call soon. 406-684-5927

Sunny joins the J-L team

The ranch recently bought a new horse for the working ranch guest program. Sunny is a new favorite amongst the staff and is sure to be a big hit for guests. He does everything well including roping and moving cows. Plus, he is super friendly and loves kids!

Charlie's first horse

Grandma Susan (Bryan's mom) recently gave Charlie his first horse...which was also Bryan's first mount about 32 years ago. The wild steed is still a little too much for Charlie to handle by himself, but before we know it he'll be saddled up and ready to rock.

Winter cattle work

We recently de-loused the cows, calves and fat cattle. The weather was gorgeous (nearly 60 degrees!) and it was fun to trail the cattle over the hills. The cattle drive was a maiden voyage for the recently weaned calves to be trailed without the guidance of their mothers. It was one of those deals where you kind of hold your breathe because they could get a wild idea and we would have spent a week re-gathering them out of the hills. Luckily, the process went really well and we sure appreciated the help from Jake and Andrew. We are now in full-swing of feeding hay to the various herds and doing planning work for the upcoming grazing seasons.

The cows came home

This morning is bitter cold (-20F) at the Twin Bridges ranch, but at least the tractor is running again. The cows will be happy to see hay when Steve shows up. Libby has already been out caring for the horses. Jim is in the shop doctoring a frozen diesel pickup.

Despite extremely frigid conditions (as low as -33F in the Centennial Valley) over the past week we have brought all of the cattle and horses back down to the Twin Bridges ranch for the winter. They are all healthy and happy to be here. In fact, most of them did a little dance when they stepped off of the trailers! Now we will be feeding them hay until Spring when we head back to the Valley.

Each of us at the J-L want to wish all of our past and future guests a very happy holiday season!

Holiday season promotion

We hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Perhaps during your time together you will be considering next year's vacation plans. We would like to encourage our past and future guests to confirm reservations soon at the J-L by offering our 2008 rates to everyone who places a deposit by check or credit card BEFORE January 15th, 2009. Please call or email to get the 2008 rates. Thank you!

Most recent addition to the J-L Team

As many of our 2008 guests know, Bryan and Libby were expecting a new arrival to their family. Well, Charles Alan Ulring was born on 9/04/08 and is a perfect addition to their family and the J-L ranch team. The adoption process has gone extremely well and they expect it to be completely finalized around the New Year. Charlie is very healthy and happy and already has a saddle, chaps, hat, spurs and of course his own horse. It will be a few years, but he will soon be out riding the range with us before we know it!

Here are photos of the little fella and his proud parents enjoying a beautiful Montana fall day.

New J-L Web Site

Welcome to the new J-L Ranch website. We hope that you find it informative and easy to use. We also hope that you will continue sharing ideas of how we can make it better in the future. Thank you very much to all of our guests who shared their photos for this project!!

Please check in from time-to-time and see what is new on the Ranch Notes section. We will be posting the latest ranch happenings and the most current photos here. This section will be updated at least monthly so that you can stay in touch with your friends here on the ranch.
